HOW IT WORKS
How a sewage treatment plant works
An STP uses a sequence of physical and biological stages to convert sewage into treated water. The exact treatment train is selected after reviewing flow, sewage characteristics, space, reuse needs and applicable discharge requirements.
1. Screening and equalisation
Large solids are separated and incoming flow is balanced so downstream treatment can operate more consistently.
2. Biological treatment
Beneficial microorganisms reduce biodegradable organic matter, helping control odour and improve treated-water quality.
3. Clarification
Biological solids are separated from water, making the next polishing stage more effective and the outlet more consistent.
4. Polishing and reuse
Final filtration or disinfection can prepare treated water for compliant discharge or suitable non-potable reuse.
